Racks
Racks let you document server racks and equipment cabinets, then visually mount your assets into specific rack units (U positions) using drag-and-drop. Every rack belongs to a client and a physical location.
Overview
The Racks module lets you:
- Create racks for a client at a specific location
- Record the rack's unit capacity and optional physical dimensions
- Mount existing assets into specific rack units and see them in a visual layout
- Reposition mounted assets by dragging them within the rack
- Track how many units are used versus free
- Unmount assets without deleting them from your inventory
Navigate to Racks
Go to Assets → Racks (/racks) in the left sidebar to see all racks in your organization.
Rack List
The list shows each rack as a row with the following columns:
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| Rack | Rack name (links to the rack), with the description shown beneath it when present |
| Client | Owning client (links to the client record) |
| Location | Physical location (links to the location record) |
| Units | Total rack units, shown as a {n}U badge |
| Assets | Number of assets currently mounted in the rack |
| Dimensions | Height × Width × Depth, joined with × when any are set (otherwise -) |
Use the Search racks… box at the top to filter by rack name. The list is paginated 25 racks per page, with Previous / Next controls. If a global client filter is active for your session, the list is also scoped to that client.
Creating a Rack
- From the rack list, click Add Rack.
- Under Location, select the Client (required), then select the Location (required). The location list loads after you pick a client.
- Under Rack Information, enter:
- Rack Name (required) — e.g. "Server Rack A1" or "Data Center Rack 01"
- Description (optional)
- Total Units (U) — defaults to 42; allowed range is 1–100. Common sizes noted in the form are 42U, 45U, and 48U.
- Optionally, under Physical Dimensions, enter Height, Width, and Depth. These are free-text fields (for example
78",24",42"), so you can use whatever units you prefer. - Click Create Rack. You are taken to the new rack's detail page.
Rack Fields
| Field | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Text | Required, up to 100 characters |
| Description | Text | Optional, up to 500 characters |
| Total Units | Number | Defaults to 42; 1–100 |
| Height | Text | Optional free-text measurement, up to 20 characters |
| Width | Text | Optional free-text measurement, up to 20 characters |
| Depth | Text | Optional free-text measurement, up to 20 characters |
| Client | Reference | Required; set at creation, not editable later |
| Location | Reference | Required; set at creation, not editable later |
Racks do not have a status field, and there is no manufacturer, model, or serial-number field on the rack itself. Track that information on the individual assets you mount.
Rack Detail View
Click a rack to open its detail page. The page is organized into three columns:
Available Assets (left)
Lists assets that belong to the rack's client and are not already mounted here. You can:
- Search the list with the search box
- Drag an asset onto an empty rack unit to mount it
- Click Add Manually to open the Add Asset to Rack dialog (see below)
Rack Layout (center)
A visual representation of the rack:
- Units are numbered and render top-to-bottom, with the highest unit number at the top and unit 1 at the bottom.
- Mounted assets appear as colored blocks sized to the number of units they occupy. The color reflects the asset type (for example, servers, network switches, routers, firewalls, UPS, and NAS/SAN devices each get a distinct color).
- Each mounted asset shows its name (linking to the asset), type, status badge, and span in U.
- A summary above the rack shows the used, free, and total rack units (for example,
30U used / 12U freeand42U total).
Details (right)
Shows the rack's Client, Location (with city when set), Capacity in units, Dimensions (only the dimensions you've filled in), and the Created date. A separate Description card appears below when the rack has a description.
Quick Actions
Below the available-assets list, the Quick Actions card provides:
- Create New Asset — opens the new-asset form pre-filled with this rack, client, and location
- View Location — opens the rack's location record
Mounting Assets
There are two ways to mount an asset.
Drag and drop
- Find the asset in the Available Assets panel.
- Drag it onto an empty rack unit. Valid drop zones highlight as you drag; occupied units and out-of-bounds positions are rejected.
- Drop it to mount the asset. The asset occupies units starting from the drop position and extending upward, based on its Rack Units value (defaulting to 1U).
Add Asset to Rack dialog
- Click Add Manually to open the Add Asset to Rack dialog.
- On the Link Existing tab, search for an asset and select it.
- Enter the Start Unit (required) and Rack Units (U) the asset should occupy. If the asset already has a rack-units value, it is pre-filled.
- Click Mount Asset.
The dialog's Create New tab links to the new-asset form (pre-filled with this rack, client, and location) so you can create and mount an asset that doesn't exist yet.
Repositioning and Editing Placements
For any mounted asset, open its menu (the ⋯ button on the asset block) in the rack layout:
- Edit Placement — opens a dialog to change the Start Unit and Rack Units (U).
- Remove from Rack — unmounts the asset after confirmation.
You can also drag a mounted asset to a new position within the rack. Placements that would overlap another asset or extend beyond the rack's capacity are not allowed.
Removing Assets
Removing (unmounting) an asset clears its rack position but keeps the asset in your inventory. Use Remove from Rack from the asset's menu, or the unmount action, and confirm. The asset reappears in the Available Assets panel.
Editing a Rack
From the rack detail page, click Edit to change the rack's Name, Description, Total Units, and Physical Dimensions. The Client and Location are shown for reference but cannot be changed after creation.
Deleting a Rack
Click Delete on the rack detail page. A rack can only be deleted when it has no mounted assets — the Delete button is disabled while assets are mounted, and a banner reminds you to remove all assets first.
Tips
- Mount multi-unit equipment (for example a 2U server) by setting its Rack Units (U) so the layout reserves the correct space and prevents overlaps.
- Because the Client and Location are fixed at creation, double-check both before clicking Create Rack.
- Use the Create New Asset quick action to add hardware that isn't in your inventory yet without leaving the rack context.
- The Available Assets panel only shows assets for the rack's client, so make sure the asset is assigned to the right client if it doesn't appear.
